July 20-21: Varsity participated in the North County Passing tournament, and did very well. They went 3-0 on Day 1, gaining entry into the championship round. One of those wins was a thrilling, come from behind 20-18 victory, which they earned after falling behind 18-0.

On Day 2, they won the first game in another thriller that went down to the wire. The second game ended in a tie, and went to overtime. In the first overtime, the team came up one lousy yard short of a game-ending touchdown. The game went 3 overtimes, and finally, the opponent made a score that the Falcons didn't match, causing them to lose in a heartbreaker.

Still, it was an excellent showing by this never say die squad of Torrey players. The results bode well for the upcoming season.

July 5-7, Visalia passing tournament : Varsity passing team and a group of linemen ventured to Visalia to take part in the Redwoods passing tournament and Trench Wars. On Thursday, the linemen worked really hard in the furnace-like heat, competing against teams from throughout California in tests of strength and agility. Coaches Wood and Doerer were pleased with the outcome.
On Friday, the Passing team went 3-0, and earned a top seeding in the Saturday championship round. Saturday, the team won its first two games, knocking off a highly-touted El Diamante team along the way, and reached the Semi-finals. Against a very good Hanford team, the game seesawed back and forth, but in the end, Hanford came out on top, and the Falcons had to settle for the Consolation game. The very tired and hot team then cooled off in the hotel pool at the glamorous Lampliter Inn, before jumping in the team bus and heading for home. Coach Ashby pronounced the team's trip to Visalia as a success, and indeed it was, as the team showed great heart, skill, and continued to come together as a unit.
More pictures are posted here. (You will have to register with XDrive to view them). Thank you, Bonnie, for volunteering to take pictures in the hot sun.

CARDINAL/GOLD GAME CAPS
SUCCESSFUL SPRING PRACTICE

The Cardinal squad made a great last-minute drive to take the win in the annual Cardinal-Gold intrasquad scrimmage.

Coach Ashby noted that the team worked very hard in spring practices, and he is pleased with how they are progressing. He was also pleased to welcome John Donahoe back as an assistant coach, after a one year absence.
Pictures from the game are available for viewing here.
Liftathon is underway:
If you have not already turned in your packet to Coach Ashby, please do so immediately. The liftathon is one of our best fundraisers, and costs the parents nothing except the time to fill in a few addresses. Please participate, and help the cause!

July 5-7: Varsity traveled to Visalia for the annual Visalia passing tournament.
Thursday, the linemen competed in the "Trench Wars" battle, perfoming admirably.
Friday, the Varsity went 3-0, and was in the hunt for a top seeding for Saturday's championship round. The team held up under withering heat--it was 110 degrees in Visalia.
Saturday, the Varsity won their first two games, reaching the Semi-finals of the tournament. In a nailbiter, the Varsity lost out to Hanford, and so just missed a shot at the Championship. Still, the team came together, kept improving and performed very well, showing a lot of heart and toughness in the course of 7 games in scorching temperatures.

Thank you, Coach Burke!!!!!!

In honor of Coach Burke's decades of selfless devotion to the school, students and players, the school district has decided to name the field at Falcon Stadium in his honor. Henceforth, and forevermore, it shall be known as "Ed Burke Field."
Coach Burke learned of the decision in a surprise ceremony in front of the gym on Monday, June 11. TV cameras were there to record the moment as a visibly moved Coach Burke thanked all in attendance and told everyone how proud he was that the field he loved so much would now bear his name. It is only fitting, as he brought so much honor to that field, now it will be a lasting tribute to him.
2007 brings the start of another era--

Welcome new head coach Scott Ashby!
The Ashby Era is set to commence. Great events are waiting to unfold. It is the task of all of us, all Falcon Faithful, to help him continue the success of our program, and build on that legacy that Coach Burke has created.
It all starts in 2007. Fasten your seat belts. Let's go for a ride!
