FALCON FRESHMAN FOOTBALL

Scrimmage vs. Oceanside, Friday, Aug. 28, 2009

by Tim Pickwell

TPHS – The Torrey Pines Freshman Football Team ran through its roster of over 70 active players Friday in a hard-hitting scrimmage against Oceanside.  The two teams alternated taking the ball at the 40-Yard Line with each Offense getting about 12 plays.  Torrey Pines started on O with Mike Ward under Center Andrew Maneval.  After two no-gains and an incomplete pass, Jaxon McAllister earned five yards up the middle.  A stop for a loss drove the Falcons back before Jonathan Raby’s reverse hand-off to Running Back Cole Jaczko earned six yards.  McAllister tacked on 7 more with another run up the middle behind the 195 lb. Maneval.   With Mike Detrow in at QB, it was another strong run by McAllister, followed by a 6-yard gain by Sean Haratyk

Then it was time for the Falcon Defense to square off against the first string Oceanside “O”.   Defensive Tackle Mike Cox, and Linebacker Raby stuffed the Oceanside ball carrier on the first play.  But, the next run went for a touchdown.  Several long Oceanside gains followed before Cox stuffed another Oceanside back for a three-yard loss.   D-Lineman Jacob Alsadek and LB Pickwell stopped the next run up the middle, while  D-End Ryan Bath had great penetration to break up the next play,   LB Miles Ahles had the initial contact to bring down the Pirate ballcarrier on the following snap.  But, another Oceanside Touchdown followed before Spencer Brewster closed out the series with an interception and a tackle for a loss on consecutive plays.

Falcon QB Patrick Boyd lead off the next series with handoffs to RB Tully Burgoon who had runs of 7 and 3 yards to move the chains.   A few plays later, QB Mike Ward connected with WR Victor Cazares for a 12-yard gain to get the Falcons close.  But, the series ended with the Falcons still shut-out.

And so it went, for four series of Offense and Defense, as the coaches shuttled in an array of linemen, corners, safeties, backs, wide-outs and QB’s.  The Falcons finally broke through in their third series when half-back Roper had gains of 12 and 20 yards to get the Falcons close enough for QB Mark Detrow to take the ball and sprint for the cone and the team’s only score.

On Defense, linemen Derek Lipincyzk (two stops up the middle), Phillip Wright (combined with Ahles for a no-gainer), and Parker Sullivan (dropped the back for a loss) distinguished themselves in the team’s third series.

Distinguished Play:      Center Johnny Yacovelle was on the field opening holes for a lot of positive yardage;  Wrestling Champion Grant McGahey was a force on the line—despite wearing a cast on his left wrist;  WR Troy Woodhall, 6-yard pass from Detrow;.
