11/9/07 La Costa Canyon Mavericks @ Torrey Pines Falcons Frosh Football
The Torrey Pines Falcons Frosh Football Team (8-0, 4-0) reserved its place in the record books completing an undefeated, untied, Palomar Conference Championship season by defeating the La Costa Canyon Mavericks (5-4, 3-1) by the count of 28-7. The Falcons gave hope to their rival opponent on the first drive as the Mavericks took the opening kickoff and drove 60 yards for the first points of the game, scoring on a fourth and goal screen pass that covered three yards. Showing poise way beyond their years, the Falcons immediately answered with a 77 yard drive of their own to quickly tie the game at 7-7 on a 5 yard touchdown run by Kevin Cuff. The big play of the drive was a 50 yard run by Johnny Wilson. There is not enough space to write how well the offensive line of Scott Mainquist, Chris Kim, Patrick Barnes, Harry Wilburn, Ryan Thomson, and Daniel Murray performed. They were simply phenomenal making hole after hole against a good LCC defense.
In the second quarter, the Falcons CJ Vafiadis recovered a fumble and they took the lead 14-7 on a nicely engineered 37 yard drive by quarterback John Cabot with Cuff scoring again from 2 yards out. The Falcons defense was very tough from that point on not yielding another point and creating four turnovers (3 picks and 1 fumble). Cabot again was key right before the half taking the Falcons into the endzone in the two-minute drill with no timeouts left. Garrett Larch-Miller running around the right end and into the promised land just inside the foam marker with only seven seconds left in the half. Johnny Wilson added a 27 yard touchdown run in the second half and that was it. Cabot was 3-7 passing for 47 yards and ran 4 times for 14 yards. Victor Pontis threw a great halfback option pass for 28 yards to CJ Vafiadis. Wilson led the team with 13 carries, 153 yards, and 1 touchdown. Cuff had 16 carries for 90 yards and 2 touchdowns. Larch-Miller had 6 carries for 39 yards and 1 touchdown.
Leading tackler on the defense was JT Stratigopoulos with 10. CJ Vafiadis added 8 tackles and the fumble recovery. Hunter Shigley had two interceptions and 6 tackles. Garrett Larch-Miller also logged an interception and two tackles. Special commendation to Harry Wilburn (5 tackles), Kevin Cuff (4 tackles), Spike Carlyle (4 tackles), Ryan Thomson (3 tackles), Johnny Wilson (2 tackles), Scott Mainquist (2 tackles) and Chris Van Datta (2 tackles).
The Falcons players learned after the game that this was the first undefeated season for their head coach, Noel Hall, after over 40 years coaching. Coach Hall and Assistant Coaches Tom Cottner, Nick Vay, Aaron DeAgostini, and Matt Brooks are to be commended for a fantastic season helping this group of young men grow and mature. This is a special group and we are certainly proud of all of you!
