LCC 10 Torrey Pines 3
The Falcons lost their final game of the season to La Costa Canyon 10-3 in a tough game dominated by defensive. Blake Busse provided the Falcons only score on a 43 yard field goal on the Falcon’s first offensive possession. LCC tied the game with a field goal in the 2nd quarter. The game remained 3-3 until the final 20 seconds of the game when LCC scored on a 9 yard run around the end.
The Falcon defense was lead by Joe Driscoll (14 tackles), Jared Wood (9 tackles and a sack), Robbie Rodriquez (7 tackles), and Micheal Mohr (5 tackles). Cornerback Martin Brusko provided a crucial interception keeping LCC from scoring early in the 4th quarter. The Falcons only score of the game was set up by Colby Kipp’s fumble recovery, which gave the Falcons the ball on LCC’s 42 yard line. After Driscoll ran for 15 yards and quarterback Shane Bingham completed a 9 yard pass to Parker Vail, Busse converted the 43 yard field goal.
The JV ended the season with a 7-2 record, finishing 2nd in the Palomar Conference. The Falcon defense played well all season, allowing an average of less than 7 points per game.
Torrey Pines 14 Westview 7
Torrey Pines JV football team won their 7th game of the year 14-7 against Westview. With the victory the Falcons remain undefeated in the Palomar conference (3-0). Joe Driscoll led the Falcons with 123 yards rushing, including a 5 yard touchdown run, 8 tackles from his linebacker position and a fumble recovery. Ian Sholl and Bassim El-Sabawi teamed up for a 27 yard touchdown pass for the Falcons other score.
The first half was dominated by defense with neither team able to score. Falcon linebackers Michael Shoen (4 tackles), Chris Johns (6 tackles), Michael Mohr (4 tackles) and Driscoll along with defensive lineman Robbie Rodriguez (7 tackles and a sack) and Mike Nasland (5 tackles) kept the Wolverine backs in check. Cornerbacks Shane Bingham, Cade Gotta, and Martin Brusko knocked down several passes and hounded the Wolverine receivers all game. Nasland put a halt to the Wolverine’s first drive with an open field tackle that resulted in a 2 yard loss. Johns, Shoen and Rodriguez each recorded tackles for losses on Westview’s next 3 possessions. On Westview’s fourth possession, it looked like they might score as they drove down to the Falcon’s 34 yard line, but Shoen and Bingham each made big defensive plays to end Westview’s scoring opportunity. The Wolverines didn’t score until their final possession of the game on a 1 yard run.
The Falcon offense was plagued by penalties in the first half. Despite several tough runs by Bassim El-Sabawi and Joe Driscoll, the Falcon’s couldn’t get on the scoreboard. After the Falcon’s first possession of the second half failed to gain any yards, Driscoll recovered a fumble by Westview’s punt returner. The Falcon’s took advantage of the good field position and scored on a 27 yard pass from Ian Sholl to El-Sabawi. Blake Busse added the extra point for a 7-0 Falcon lead.
The Falcons scored again on their first possession of the 4th quarter. Driscoll got the ball down to the 1 yard line on a 44 yard run behind the blocks of Rodriguez, Johns, and Anthony Naser After the Falcon’s lost 4 yards on their next play, Driscoll ran the ball in from the 5 yard line. Busse added the extra point to make the score 14-0.
The Falcons finish their season next week with a showdown against La Costa Canyon, who are also undefeated in the conference.
Torrey Pines 17 Rancho Bernardo 7
The JV Falcons improved their Palomar Conference record to 2-0 (6-1 overall) with a tough win against Rancho Bernardo 17-7. The Falcon defense kept the Broncos in check all game, allowing only 19 yards rushing on 13 carries, while the Falcon offense gained over 230 yards.
Blake Busse got the Falcons started with a 31 yard feild goal on the Falcons first drive. The Falcons began the drive in great field position thanks to their defense which kept the Broncos from gaining any yards on their first possession.
After the Falcons and Broncos traded possessions, the Falcons opened things up with a beautiful 68 yard touchdown pass from Ian Sholl to Parker Vail. Sholl released the ball just as he was being hit and delivered a perfect pass to Vail who caught the ball in stride. Busse added the extra point to make the score 10-0.
The Broncos came out throwing the ball in the second half but Falcon cornerbacks Shane Bingham and Martin Brusko were up to the task. Bingham knocked down several passes forcing the Broncos to punt on their first 2 possessions of the second half. The Falcon offense, however, could not move the ball early in the second half and turned the ball over giving the Broncos the ball at the Falcons 19 yard line. The Broncos took advantage with a 19 yard touchdown pass to make the score 10-7.
The Falcon offense moved the ball down the field on their next possession but couldn't score. The Falcon defense, however, rose to the challenge. Mike Shoen stepped in front of a Bronco pass and tipped it into the hands of Bingham who returned the interception to the Bronco's 10 yard line. Shervin Ghanadian then ran the ball in from the 10 to make the score 17-7.
On a day dominated by defense, defensive tackles Ryan Hagen (6 tackles) and Mike Nasland (3 tackles) controlled the line of scrimmage for the Falcons. LBs Joe Driscoll (6 tackles), Micheal Mohr (4 tackles) and Chris Johns (2 tackles and a sack) kept the Broncos running backs in check, and Robbie Rodriguez and Ghanadian each knocked down a Bronco's pass.
Next up for the Falcons is Mt. Carmel.
Torrey Pines 31 Poway 12
The Torrey Pines Falcons JV (5-1) began league play in the Palomar Conference on October 11th with a decisive 31-12 win over visiting Poway. The Falcons offense struck quick and often running up a commanding 31-0 half-time score. The Falcons defense was meanwhile relentless, forcing turnovers and putting the Titans in punting situations in virtually every first half possession.
Torrey Pines first offensive series began on the Falcons’ 46 yard line after a 26-yard opening kickoff return by Shervin Ghannadian. Torrey Pines would drive the ball to the Poway 19 yard line before place kicker Blake Busse booted a 36-yard field goal to give the Falcons an early lead which they would never relinquish. The Falcons’ second possession of the night was capped by a 36-yard touchdown run by fullback Joe Driscoll, while the third possession featured a 57-yard scamper to the end zone by wingback Bussim El-Sabawi. The Falcons would then go to the air where quarterback Cyrus Rahimi connected with Parker Vail on a 43-yard toss which took the Falcons down to the Titans’ one-yard line. Rahimi handed the ball off to his fullback Joe Driscoll on the next play from scrimmage who attacked the right side of the Poway defense for his second touchdown of the night. The Falcons’ final possession of the first half featured a 31-yard pass from Rahimi to El-Sabawi which set up a 12-yard quarterback keeper by Rahimi around the left end and into the end zone. Kicker Blake Busse put the final nail in the Titans’ coffin with his fourth of four extra point conversions of the night. The Falcons retired to the lockerroom at half time with an impressive 31-0 lead which would carry Torrey Pines through the second half for a final score of 31-12.
Torrey Pines utilized six different running backs and three quarterbacks to accumulate 191 rushing yards and 102 passing yards on the night. El-Sabawi rushed for a total of 99 yards on eight carries while Driscoll added 46 yards on five carries. Quarterback Cyrus Rahimi was a perfect 3 for 3 with 84 total passing yards.
The Torrey Pines defense once again swarmed to the ball carriers, forced fumbles, knocked down quarterbacks, and intimidated receivers. Linebackers Josh Mendoza and Michael Mohr led the defense with nine tackles a piece, while linebacker Joe Driscoll recorded six tackles and one interception. Defensive ends Robbie Rodriguez and Jered Wood had impressive outings with Rodriguez recovering two fumbles and finishing the night with four tackles and one quarterback sack. Jered Wood had six tackles, a sack, and provided some outstanding special teams play. Other defensive standouts included linebackers Chris Johns and Marcus Bray with six and five tackles respectively.
Torrey Pines will travel to Rancho Bernardo High School on October 19th to face the Broncos in their second of five Palomar Conference league games with a kick-off time of 5:00 p.m.
Torrey Pines 14 Oceanside 6
The Falcons got back on the winning track with a tough 14-6 win over Oceanside at Ed Burke Field on Friday. Bassim El-Sabawi ran for 2 touchdowns and the Falcon defense forced 4 tournovers to get the win. Joe Driscoll, who forced 2 fumbles and had 9 tackles, Josh Mendoza, 1 forced fumble and 7 tackles, Michael Mohr, 6 tackles and a fumble recovery, Ryan Hagen, 5 tackles, and Robbie Rodriquez, 4 tackles and a blocked punt, led the Falcon defense.
The Falcons got the ball first but only managed to gain 1 yard on 3 plays before punting the ball over to the Pirates. The Pirates, on the other hand, started quickly, gaining 20 yards on their first 2 plays. The Falcon defense toughened, however, with Robbie Rodriguez and Joe Driscoll each stopping the Pirates for losses to force a punt. The Falcons took over on their own 45 yard line and quickly scored to take a 7-0 lead on a 29 yard run by El-Sabawi, who found a huge hole behind the blocking of Marcos Bray, Brandon Schein, and Rodriguez. The 55 yard drive included a 13 yard pass from Shane Bingham to Martin Brusko.
The Falcon defense continued their inspired play when Driscoll and Mendoza forced a fumble that was recovered by Mohr. The Falcon offense could not take advantage of the turnover, however, and were forced to punt. The Falcons got the ball right back when Driscoll's hit forced another fumble that was recovered by El-Sabawi. This time the Falcon offense got the ball in the end zone on a 42 yard run by El-Sabawi to make the score 14-0 at the half.
The Pirates opened the second half with a 85 yard drive that ended with a 3 yard touchdown run. The Falcon defense, however, did not get discouraged. Hagen made a tackle for a 6 yard loss and Driscoll caused a fumble that was recovered by Brusko to stop the Pirates next drive. On the Pirates next possession, Jered Wood and Hagen made several tackles and Mendoza and Rodriguez stopped the Pirates behind the line of scrimmage on fourth and 2. The Pirates final possession ended when Shane Bingham stepped in front of the Pirates receiver for an interception.
The Falcon offense failed to score in the second half but controlled the ball for most of the half behind the offensive line of Rodriguez, Bray, Schein, Anthony Naser, Keenan Faix, and Hooman Barekatain and some tough running by Driscoll, who finished with 84 yards rushing. The Falcons begin league play next week with a game against Poway.
San Pasqual 6 Torrey Pines 3
The JV Falcons suffered their first loss of the season, 6 - 3 to San Pasqual. Both defenses played very well in a hard hitting game at Torrey Pines.
The Falcon defense, led up front by Jared Wood (4 tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery, and a blocked pass), Ryan Hagen (4 tackles), Robbie Rodriguez (2 tackles), and Nolan Fargo (1 tackle, a forced fumble), were in the Eagles backfield all day. Cornerbacks Shane Bingham (5 tackles) and Michael Mohr (4 tackles) played tough defense on the corners for the Falcons. The Eagles gained only 13 yards on 20 plays through the first 3 quarters. The Eagle defense played tough as well. The Falcons had 10 first downs in the first half, led by Joe Driscoll (74 yards rushing) and Bassim El-Sabawi (56 yards rushing) but could only manage to grab a 3 - 0 lead at halftime on Blake Busse's 25 yard field goal.
The Falcons look poised to score late in the 3rd quarter after Michael Shoen blocked an Eagle punt that was recovered by Wood on the Eagles' 31 yard line. The Falcon offense, however, lost 5 yards on 3 plays and were forced to punt. Things continued to look good for the Falcon's as Rodriguez's punt pinned the Eagles back on their 8 yard line to start the 4th quarter. On their second play from their 3 yard line, however, the Eagles powered through the middle of the Falcon's defense and the Eagles' fullback raced 97 yards for the lone touchdown of the game. A missed extra point left the game at 6 - 3.
The Falcon defense played well for the remainder of the 4th quarter but the offense could not get on the scoreboard in their final two possessions of the game.
The Falcons have a bye next week. Their next game is against Oceanside at Torrey Pines on Friday, October 5.
Torrey Pines 17 Mira Mesa 7
The Falcons JV football team improved to 3-0 with a tough win at Mira Mesa. The Marauders offense started fast, gaining 22 yards on their first 3 plays. Defensive tackle Nolan Fargo got the Falcon defense on track with a sack for a 14 yard loss, forcing the Marauders to punt. The Falcon offense immediately took the ball down field on tough runs by Michael Small and Joe Driscoll, and two long runs (22 yards and 20 yards) by Bassim El-Sabawi. El-Sabawi finished off the drive by running past the Marauder defense for a 16 yard touchdown.
The Falcon defense contained the Mira Mesa offense for the remainder of the first half. The Marauders threaten to score just before halftime but they were stopped by Shane Bingham's interception in the end zone.
The Marauders came out ready to play in the second half, driving 45 yards down the field on thier first possession of the half for their only score of the day, a 1 yard run by the Marauder quarterback. The Falcons took the momentum back on their next possession with a 43 yard run by El-Sabawi. After two runs by Driscoll gave the Falcons a first down on the 17 yard line, El-Sabawi scored again on a 17 yard run. El-Sabawi finished the game with 2 touchdowns and 155 yards rushing on 16 carries.
The Falcon defense, led by Josh Mendoza (9 tackles), Driscoll (8 tackles), Fargo (5 tackles), and Cade Gotta (5 tackles), shut out the Marauders for the rest of the game. The Falcon offense finished thier scoring with an 25 yard field goal by Blake Busse. Driscoll set up the score with a 21 yard run down to the 8 yard line. Cornerback Adam Espino ended the game with an interception that he returned to the 3 yard line.
Torrey Pines 28 Eastlake 7
The Torrey Pines JV improved their record to 2-0 with a win at Eastlake. The Falcon offense started slow, having to punt after only gaining 4 yards on their first possession. The Falcon defense, however, quickly got the ball back in the hands of the Falcons. Mike Nasland got into the Eastlake backfield and stopped Eastlake for a 2 yard loss. On the next play Nolan Fargo stopped Eastlake with a 5 yard loss. On 3rd down, Eastlake tried to pass, but Fargo was in the backfield again, sacking Eastlake's QB for a 13 yard loss. With the ball back in the Falcon's hands, Joe Driscoll and Bassim El-Sabawi got things going with 20 yard runs. Taylor Crumpler finished the drive with a 13 yard touchdown run.
Eastlake struck back on the ensuing kickoff with a 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Falcons began their next drive with a 33 yard pass from Shane Bingham to El-Sabawi, but their drive stalled. The Titans looked like they might get things going, but Nasland made a key tackle stopping Eastlake on 3rd down forcing the Titans to punt. The Falcon's offense then drove 70 yards downfield and scored on an 11 yard run by Driscoll.
Josh Mendoza (6 tackles), Adam Espino (4 tackles), and Driscoll (5 tackles) led the Falcon defense, keeping the Titan offense in check for the remainder of the game.
On offense, El-Sabawi took over on the Falcon's next two possessions. First, El-Sabawi outran the Titan defense for a 60 yard touchdown run. The next time El-Sabawi touched the ball, he streaked past the Titans again, this time for a 37 yard touchdown run. El-Sabawi finished the game with 158 yards. The Falcon offensive line also paved the way for Driscoll (83 yards rushing) and Crumpler (49 yards rushing) to keep the Falcon offense moving, averaging almost 10 yards a carry.
Torrey Pines 42 Pahrump, NV 6
Torrey Pines JV started the season with an impressive 42-6 win over Pahrump, Nevada. Led by the offensive line of Brandon Schein, Marcos Bray, Hooman Barekatain, Anthony Naser, Keenan Faix and Robbie Rodriguez the Falcons rushed for 268 yards on 28 carries - an average of almost 10 yards a carry. Bassim El-Sabawi rushed for 64 yards on 4 carries with a touchdown and Joe Driscoll rushed for 58 yards on 3 carries with a touchdown. Taylor Crumpler, Nolan Fargo, and Scott Cramer also added rushing touchdowns. Defensively, the Falcons held Pahrump scoreless until late in the fourth quarter. Shane Bingham intercepted a pass in the first quarter and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. Cade Gotta also had an interception for the Falcons. Josh Mendoza (4 tackles) and Joe Driscoll (3 tackles and a fumble recovery) anchored the Falcons strong defense.
