Carlsbad 24 Torrey Pines 17
Story on the Union-Tribune website
By Kevin O'Connor Jr.
SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE
November 22, 2008
OCEANSIDE – Carlsbad quarterback Michael Leonard took one for the team, but it was a special play that propelled the Lancers into the second round of the playoffs.
Thanks to a pair of blocked punts – including one late in the fourth quarter by Lancers senior Darren Scortt – and the scrambling of Leonard, Carlsbad edged Torrey Pines 24-17 in a first-round matchup in the San Diego Section Division I playoffs last night at El Camino High.
The Lancers advance to face No. 4-seed Chula Vista (7-3) in Friday's quarterfinals.
“Hats off to special teams,” Leonard said. “That (blocked punt) was definitely a momentum changer.”
Despite playing on a Grade 1 sprain of his left medial collateral ligament, Leonard made several huge plays with his legs. Often limping back to the huddle, he finished with 12 carries for 102 yards, with seven of those carries going for first downs – including three that converted third down situations.
“I didn't think I was going to play this week; it was a game-time decision,” said Leonard, who was wearing a brace. “I didn't think (I could scramble), but I did. I honestly didn't think I'd be able to move that well.”
But the game's other star – Torrey Pines running back Robert Murray – was making it hard for Carlsbad to begin to think about next week. Fortunately for the Lancers, their special teams were just that – special.
With the score tied and just 2:57 left in the fourth quarter, Scortt broke through the left side of the Falcons' line and blocked Robbie Rodriguez's punt, giving them the ball at the Torrey Pines 35-yard line.
“The hole opened up right when I was aiming on going, and I just ran as hard as I could to do whatever I could to get the ball,” Scortt said. “Lucky enough, I got my hand on it.”
The Carlsbad offense did not disappoint on the ensuing drive, running nine plays and milking away the clock, ultimately scoring the game-winning touchdown on a 2-yard plunge by the team's leading rusher, Ashton Barbour, with 15.4 seconds in regulation.
Junior running back Michael Taele enjoyed the finest game of his season with 11 carries for 85 yards. His 35-yard touchdown run gave his team a 14-7 lead in the second quarter.
The Falcons' (3-7-1) loss spoiled an incredible game by Murray. The powerful senior rushed for a game-high 187 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns – including a 19-yard third quarter scoring run that tied it – to cap a fine career at Torrey Pines.
“He is a warrior and ran the ball very well,” Falcons coach Scott Ashby said.

Escondido beats Torrey Pines
By Glae Thien
SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE
October 18, 2008
ESCONDIDO – Escondido's Ricky Seale set career bests by rushing for 311 yards and five touchdowns against Torrey Pines last night. Next he hopes to break those marks.
The junior running back spearheaded the Cougars to a 55-28 victory over the Falcons on a wild outing in which both teams combined for 924 yards rushing with two players on each squad easily passing the 100-yard mark in the Avocado League opener for both schools.
“I've got to do better,” said Seale, who carried 32 times, including TD runs of 56, 40 and 30 yards. “Yeah, it's always good (to set marks), but you can't dwell on it too long. We have to do just as good next week.”
Seale, who increased his season totals to 1,219 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns, established his previous bests last season with 287 yards rushing in a game and four TDs (twice).
The Cougars (5-1, 1-0) claimed their first victory in seven all-time meetings with Torrey Pines by bouncing back from a 28-14 loss to Vista a week ago.
“You know what, we really got a reality check last week,” Seale said. “We came in 4-0 and came out 4-1.”
Tim Zier added 163 yards on 16 carries for Escondido, including scores of 80 and 23 yards. Meanwhile, Torrey Pines quarterback Lenny Magill ran for 176 yards and two TDs on nine carries, and Robert Murray added 179 yards on 19 rushes, including an 80-yard scoring run, for the Falcons (2-4, 0-1).
“It's the kind of game that we like to get into,” said Escondido coach Paul Gomes, whose club has scored 40 or more points in each victory. “Offensively, we feel that we're on a pretty good pace right now. It was a nice win for us.”
Cougars receiver Joel Sisler twice drew “ah's” from the home crowd for jarring blocks on running plays, and lineman Chad Carlin had a key block on Seale's 56-yard score in the third quarter.
Escondido, which held a 35-21 halftime lead, compiled 508 yards rushing and 56 passing.
Magill, effective at faking handoffs on option plays, amassed 130 yards on five carries in the first quarter to help keep the score knotted at 14.
On his first carry, Magill scampered 62 yards to set up a 2-yard TD run by Brock Ringo with 6:37 left in the opening quarter, just 46 seconds after Escondido opened the scoring on Zier's 23-yard run.
Seale responded with his 40-yard scoring run, followed by Magill with a 12-yard TD run. Then Seale added TD runs of 1 and 8 yards for a 28-14 edge with 4:28 before halftime.

Poway 18 Torrey Pines 14
By Matt Arnold
SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE
September 27, 2008
POWAY – Since losing the team's quarterback Stewart Bell in the season opener, Poway has relied more than ever on star running back Nick Ricciardulli, who came into Friday's game with a staggering 83 carries for 554 yards. Despite Ricciardulli's ironman effort, the Titans faced a tough Torrey Pines defense and a potential 1-3 start for the defending section Division I champions.
Fortunately for Poway, the Titans got a huge boost in their passing game with the season debut of former junior varsity quarterback John “Bubba” Jensen-Johnson, who threw for two touchdowns, helping the Titans get to .500 with an 18-14 victory.
“He made some big-time plays,” Poway coach Damian Gonzalez said. “Obviously a touchdown early on. He had a great run that got us a first down. The kid really stepped up in his first varsity start.”
Leading wide receiver Brett Thomas had been filling in at quarterback, but with Jensen-Johnson leading the way, Thomas got to return to his natural position and made an impact with a 30-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.
“That's the 'W' tonight,” Gonzalez said. “If we don't have Brett back at receiver, we don't win tonight.”
Still, it was clear that the Titans were going to go as far as Ricciardulli and the offensive line would take them. In the first half alone, Poway fed him the ball 18 times for 115 yards. This ball-control-style offense paid huge dividends as the Titans dominated the time of possession and were able to keep a close game just out of reach with several third-and-long rushing conversions. For the game, Ricciardulli carried the ball 33 times, gaining 184 yards.
“Nick just doesn't stop,” Gonzalez said. “His feet just keep going. You know, he's our heart and soul right now and he's doing a heck of a job.”
After a chop block by Johnson cost Poway a second-and-goal from the 5-yard line, the quarterback redeemed himself on a fourth-and-goal from the 24, scrambling and finding time to hit tight end Jake Sims for a touchdown to give the Titans the lead for good.
“We wanted to go to Brett, but they triple-covered him over there. And we had our tight end run a diagonal and we just got him open. He is just a big playmaker,” Gonzalez said. “I'm just proud of our kids for staying in there and playing tough.”

Rancho Bernardo 24 Torrey Pines 21
By Kevin O'Connor Jr.
SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE
September 20, 2008
The kicker is often the forgotten man on a football team.
Rancho Bernardo will surely remember Brian Huynh after the junior kicker nailed a 42-yard, winning field goal at the buzzer last night.
Huynh's field goal and a balanced offense helped the Broncos overcome a Torrey Pines second-half comeback and get their first victory of the season, 24-21, at Falcons Field.
“It was amazing. That was the best feeling I've ever had in my whole life,” Huynh said after the game as the visiting crowd chanted his name.
The Falcons (1-2) scored 21 straight points in the third quarter to overcome a 14-0 halftime deficit. Rancho Bernardo (1-1) scored the final 10 points to come out on top.
“(Torrey Pines) did a great job coming back in the second half, but our kids hung in there,” Broncos head coach Brad Elrod said. “They still believed that we could get this done. So, I'm real proud of them.”
Rancho Bernardo scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. Junior quarterback Nick Troyer tossed a pair of touchdowns, a 38-yard catch-and-run to senior wide receiver Bubba Velasquez and a beautiful 30-yard post to junior receiver John Barry.
“We had everybody working,” said Troyer, who finished 15-for-24 with 205 yards passing and the aforementioned touchdowns. “Our outside guys were blocking on the sweeps, and that set up the backside plays. We had the post that went over across the backside (to Barry).”
In the second half, Broncos senior running back Billy Bradshaw took over. The 6-foot-2, 206-pound transfer from Utah bullied his way to 92 yards on 20 carries for the game, including an important 1-yard-TD plunge on fourth-and-goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter that tied the score at 21.
“He brings a real attitude to our running game,” Elrod said. “That's what we want, someone physical. We're really happy to have him.”
On the first play of the third quarter, Falcons senior quarterback Lenny Magill called his own number, after a fake to the senior fullback Robert Murray, and scampered 78 yards up the middle to the Broncos' 2. Murray ran it in on the next play.
On their next possession, senior running back Brock Ringo took an inside reverse 66 yards to tie the score. Ringo would leave the game in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury and did not return.

Falcons 41 Rough Riders 0
North County Times
By JAY PARIS - Staff Writer | Friday, September 5, 2008 10:09 PM PDT ∞
CARMEL VALLEY ---- Led by an impressive running attack, Torrey Pines High opened its season with a 41-0 victory over visiting Los Angeles Roosevelt on Friday night.
The Falcons ran roughshod over the Rough Riders, content to keep their offense close to the ground as they kept the scoreboard spinning throughout the game with six rushing touchdowns.
Brock Ringo paced the charge, scoring first-half touchdowns from 12, 1 and 29 yards.
Torrey Pines collected 344 rushing yards and was able to survive an all-out passing attack by Roosevelt, an L.A. City Section playoff team last season.
The Falcons (1-0) are trying to rebound from a 2-7 season that kept them from the 2007 playoffs. By their showing against Roosevelt (0-1), it appears they're headed in the right direction.
With tricky handoffs, direct snaps to running backs and numerous inside reverses, the Falcons used trickery and solid blocking to baffle the Rough Riders' defense.
The Falcons (1-0) went away from Ringo and turned to Robert Murray in the third quarter, and he was just as successful. He scored on a 50-yard touchdown run to the left side to give Torrey Pines a 28-0 cushion.
The rout gained momentum on the next Falcons series when Kyle Middleton took an inside reverse 46 yards for another score.
The final score came courtesy of Shervin Ghannadian's 5-yard run up the middle.
Defensively, the Falcons had to contend with the pass-happy Jesse Diaz. He heaved it 33 times, completing 15 for 158 yards. He was picked off late in the game by Alberto Aroeste.
The Falcons' defense also added four sacks and held the Rough Riders to 69 rushing yards.
